For much of your life you will be faced with the option to quit or to push through. I encourage you to push through.
Yesterday my son had the day off from school to end his Easter break. I decided to take the day after Easter and spend it with him doing some ‘manly’ things. We started off slowly by getting my phone repaired and then grabbing a breakfast/lunch. After a trip to the batting cage we decided to get to work. A quick trip to Lowes allowed us to fill the car with tools, mulch and planting soil. The project was our front yard.
I have friends who love working in the yard for relaxation. I don’t understand them at all. I’ve never seen an advertisement for a vacation include the phrases “backbreaking labor”, “sweat until you stink” or “shovel until you pass out”. At any rate, yard work is exactly that, work.
As I mowed the yard, dug out flower beds and laid bags of mulch I began to reflect on a lesson from my childhood. The lesson is that I will grow if I just “push through”. This lesson took up residence in my life in many ways:
- Without a father in the home I had to learn how to lead at a young age. Push through.
- A school counselor told me – in the 7th grade – to forget going to college. Push through.
- As a 17 year old student I worked in the summer heat loading UPS trucks. Push through.
- Running on a treadmill wrapped in a trash bag in order to cut weight as a wrestler. Push through.
- Praying for 9 years until my mom trusted Christ as Savior. Push through.
Scripture speaks a lot of pushing through:
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.- Galatians 6:9
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. – James 1:12
I am convinced that most Christians never experience a passionate faith-walk with Jesus because they quit at the moment they should be pushing through. When times are tough and the odds look bleak, push through. When you feel like you have worked so hard that you can’t work any more, push through. When the vision God has placed in your life is on the other side of major hurdles only God can move, push through.
Each time you push through and get to the other side, you gain a view you would not have had if you quit.
